Why is Clay expensive to dispose??

The cost of disposing of clay can be attributed to several factors:
Landfill Tax: This is a tax imposed on the disposal of waste to landfill. As of April 2023, the standard rate tax is £102.10 per tonne and the lower rate tax is £3.25 per tonne1. This tax is designed to encourage waste producers to produce less waste, recover more value from waste (through recycling or composting, for example), and use more environmentally friendly methods of waste disposal1.
Gate Fees: These are the charges levied by the disposal point for accepting waste. Depending on the type of waste and its contaminants, these fees can range anywhere from £10 – £60 per tonne1.
Transportation Costs: The cost of transporting the clay from the site where it is excavated to the disposal site can also add to the overall cost.
Environmental Impact: Clay is a type of ‘inert’ waste. Disposing of large quantities of clay can have environmental impacts, such as altering landscapes and ecosystems, which can lead to additional costs in terms of environmental mitigation or remediation measures.
Demand and Supply: If there’s a high demand for clay disposal and limited places that accept clay, the cost can increase.
